US Office Accepts Medgar W. Evers Award for WCC

Rev. David Lewis presented the Medgar W. Evers Award to Rev. Deborah DeWinter at the US Conference for the WCC's offices in New York.
The Medgar W. Evers Award for Religion & Education, given annually by the Honorary Committee of Walker County, Alabama, was awarded this year to the WCC for its "oustanding participation in organizations, programs, and efforts that benefit all citizens."
The award is named after American civil rights leader Medgar W. Evers, who was assassinated on June 12, 1963 in Jackson, Mississippi. The award is given annually to persons or organizations that have made valuable contributions to religion and education. Past recepients include the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA.
Rev. David Lewis travelled from Walker County, Alabama to New York City to personally present the award to Rev. Deborah DeWinter, who accepted it on behalf of the WCC on April 2, 2007.
In his letter to the US Office, Rev. Lewis wrote on behalf of the award committee, "We take pride in bestowing this honor upon you from the citizens of Walker County, Alabama, and citizens of the State of Alabama. You have made valuable contributions to the good of humanity."
