Ten Days in February - A Discussion on the 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches
San Jose, CaliforniaSaint Claire Hotel, San Jose, California
Friday, May 12th at 7pm
Thousands of Christians from many nations gathered together in Brazil for 10 days in February at the 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches. They prayed, discussed, reflected and planned, inspired by the Assembly theme – "God, in your grace, transform the world."
The Assembly, the governing body of the WCC, represents the 348 member churches. Using the consensus process, the Assembly addressed faith and order, religious plurality and inter-faith dialogue, overcoming violence, indigenous rights, the environment, economic justice and much more. The Assembly elected a new 150-member Central Committee to lead the WCC into the next decade and appointed presidents for each region and for the Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches to promote ecumenism.
The Assembly included people who have been keeping the faith with courage in a wide range of circumstances. In prayer and song enriched by our different cultures, languages and perspectives, we experienced the transforming grace of knowing and praying together. And now, our journey continues, with renewed vitality and hope. The ecumenical movement is alive and thriving. Join us on the journey.
The WCC is the community of churches it encompasses. Our churches are our people. To keep our community alive and vibrant and moving always towards our goal of Christian unity, we must keep walking together and bringing more people and new life into the ecumenical movement. Please join with other friends and supporters of the World Council of Churches along with representatives of member churches and leadership in this discussion on our transformational efforts to realize our Christian unity in a more just and peaceful world in the post-Assembly era.
Refreshments will be served. There will be short presentations on the direction of the WCC, Assembly progress and the mid-point of the Decade to Overcome Violence. Presentations will be followed by opportunities for dialogue and discussion.
