Making Peace: Claiming God's Promise
Towards the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation
Annual Meeting of the United States Conference for the World Council of Churches, 2008
The Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington, D.C.
The Annual Meeting of the United States Conference of the World Council of Churches was held this year on 2-4 December, 2008 in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C. The theme of the Annual Meeting was Making Peace: Claiming God's Promise - Towards the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation, based on Jeremiah 6:14. This meeting was strategically located in our nation's capitol, Washington, D.C., to provide an opportunity for WCC member churches in the US to deliver a message outlining hopes for the new administration in leading our nation forward and working for peace with justice. In this context, heads of US member churches shared their concerns and their hopes in a special plenary session which highlighted our theme.
In addition, a "Living Letters" delegation representing member churches from other regions of the world was present to express solidarity for the message of the US churches, to bring their own messages of hope to the President-Elect of the United States, and to share stories of peacemaking from their home regions of the world. (Representatives were present from member churches in the South Pacific, Middle East, Asia, Africa, Latin America, Canada and Europe).
Because peace is not attainable without justice, other plenary sessions will focused on some of the critical issues of our day:
- Ethical Dimensions of Climate Change
- Race for the Future: Becoming Ambassadors of Reconcilation
- The WCC and the Middle East: The Amman Call and Next Steps for the US Churches
